Morrison's insight improved vision for millions

American Doctor of Optometry Robert Morrison is best known for being the optometrist to the stars and once famously receiving a Rolls Royce as a thank you gift from the Queen of Holland. He was a stickler for patient confidentiality and never revealed the two United States Presidents who he treated.

After graduating from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry in 1948 with no honors, Dr. Robert Morrison had this insight: He would spend the rest of his life working, so he might as well be the best he could be.

Morrison read voraciously, attended every lecture he could and took specialized classes on weekends, all while building his optometry practice. In his quest to be the best, he invented the soft contact lens and improved the vision of at least 60 million people. His patients included 17 royal families, seven consecutive Pennsylvania governors and celebrities such as Barbara Walters, Sharon Stone, Sean Connery and Chuck Norris.

Morrison, of Longboat Key, died Jan. 7. He was 90.

He found it “fun and flattering” to treat celebrities and royalty, but he noted that the eye care was the same no matter who the patient was in an interview included in his 2006 biography, “Man of Vision: The Story of Dr. Robert Morrison,” compiled by Rosanne Knorr and Kevin Kremer.

“It was almost unrealistic because in all those years, there never was a bad day at the office with Dad,” said Morrison’s daughter, Patty Schimberg. “Every single patient was interesting to him.”

His work wasn’t limited to the rich and famous. Prince Bernard of the Netherlands knighted Morrison at the United Nations for his work in developing countries.

In a 2005 interview with the Longboat Observer, he attributed his success to “having more energy than brains” and “good timing and a little luck” before admitting: “Hey, what can I say? When you’re good, you’re good.”

Born Dec. 1, 1924, in Harrisburg, Pa., he focused more on socializing and sports when he was in school. 

Even after he focused on his career, he never lost his passion for sports or socializing. He remained an avid tennis player after he and his wife, Ruth, retired to Longboat Key part time, and despite a cancer diagnosis in 2000 that required him to consume a 100% liquid diet, he frequently joined friends for dinner because he loved the company.

Morrison enrolled at Pennsylvania State University for a year, then enlisted in the Army in 1943 and served in camps and hospitals throughout the U.S.

When he returned to school, he contemplated premed studies, but worried about whether he would be accepted to medical school. After his younger brother, Vic, took a summer job with an optometrist that sounded fascinating to Morrison, he opted to enroll in optometry school.

After graduating, Morrison opened a practice that grew rapidly. Soon, nearly a dozen surgeons in Harrisburg were referring their patients to Morrison.

In the 1950s, Morrison noticed that myopia in children and teenagers nearly always progressed when the patient was fitted with eyeglasses, but the progress was slower or nearly nonexistent for youngsters who wore rigid contact lenses. Time Magazine ran a story in 1957 explaining Morrison’s theories, and the offices of eye doctors throughout the country filled up with children and teenagers whose parents sought to preserve their vision with contact lenses.

But rigid contact lenses were uncomfortable for patients. In 1961, Morrison learned that a professor in Prague had created an artificial jaw from a plastic that was hydrophilic, or water loving, that Morrison suspected could be a good fit for the eye’s liquid environment.

Morrison was on a flight to Prague the same day he learned about the hydrophillic plastic. He spent 10 years developing the new lens before selling the patent to Bausch and Lomb.

Morrison’s career as optometrist to the stars began when he got a call that he first thought was a prank from a man who claimed to be the personal physician of King Baudouin of Belgium. The king had sought soft contact lenses from five doctors, but none were comfortable. After Morrison found the right fit, he gained a following of royals and celebrities, many of whom became his personal friends.

“He had the kind of life a lot of people dream about,” said Bernard Orbach, who befriended Morrison 65 years ago in Harrisburg and now lives on Longboat Key. “There were some times you had to ask yourself if it was really true, but he actually did these things.”

He played tennis with Prince Albert of Monaco and Bill Cosby.

The Shah of Iran paid Morrison a visit in Harrisburg and felt the water of the optometrist’s swimming pool and said it was cold. Morrison quipped, “I would heat it if I could afford it, but the price of oil is too high.”

Lynda Carter, aka Wonder Woman, gave Morrison an autographed photograph that stated: “You are a beautiful man!! Now these eyes can see.”

In retirement, Morrison traveled the globe for the World Health Organization and taught at Penn State. There, the once mediocre student shared this insight: Do your best, no matter who the patient is.

“I tell my students to do the same, because you’ll only feel OK if you do your best,” he told the Longboat Observer in 2005. “After all these years, I can now look back and say that I feel good.”

Morrison was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Ruth. He is survived by his son, Jim Morrison; daughter, Patty Schimberg; and four grandchildren.

A service took place Jan. 11, at Temple Beth Israel.

Southwestern Black Bean Dip

Ingredients
  • 15oz can black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 15oz can corn, drained (or 1-3/4 cup fresh or frozen-then-thawed corn)
  • 3 vine-ripened tomatoes, seeded and chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 1/2 red onion, chopped
  • 1 jalapeno pepper, ribs and seeds removed then minced
  • 1 clove fresh garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup chopped cilantro (or more or less)
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • salt and pepper
  • 3/4 cup Zesty Italian salad dressing
Directions
  1. Combine all ingredients in a bowl then mix to combine and serve with tortilla chips. Can be made a day ahead of time.

Cocktails, Cookies & Connections

Cataracts Surgery


Your Doctor of Optometry provides referrals to secondary specialists, such as ophthalmologists, for treatment of systemic diseases or eye surgery when necessary. Doctors of Optometry also co-manage the treatment of ocular diseases and pre- and post-surgical patient care with ophthalmologists.
Cataract surgery is a very safe and effective procedure to remove the cloudy crystalline lens from the eye and replace it with a clear implant. However, there are risks and limitations that need to be discussed with a Doctor of Optometry or ophthalmologist prior to undergoing the procedure. With improved technology, options now exist when it comes to selecting the proper lens implant for your eyes.
When the normally clear lens within your eye becomes cloudy and opaque, it is called a cataract. Cataracts vary from extremely small areas of cloudiness to large opaque areas that cause a noticeable reduction in vision.
Cataracts are a function of aging and are most often found in people over the age of 60, although cataracts are also occasionally found in younger people. If a child is born with a cataract it is referred to as a congenital cataract.
Some indications that a cataract may be forming include blurred or hazy vision that cannot be corrected by changing the glasses prescription, or the feeling of having a film over the eyes that does not go away with blinking. A temporary change in distance and/or near vision may also occur. An increased sensitivity to glare, especially at night, may be experienced. Cataracts develop without pain or redness.
A comprehensive eye examination by a Doctor of Optometry can determine if you have a cataract forming. Cataracts may develop slowly over many years or they may form rapidly in a matter of months. Some cataracts never progress to the point that they need to be removed. When a change in glasses can no longer provide functional vision and the cataract is starting to interfere with your daily activities, your Doctor of Optometry will arrange a consultation with a cataract surgeon.
During cataract surgery, the old cloudy lens is removed and an intraocular lens implants, inserted in your eye at the time of surgery, serve as a new lens. Sometimes the lens implant can give you good enough distance vision that you may not need glasses. Your near vision will still be blurred however, so you will likely still require glasses to read. Your Doctor of Optometry will prescribe new lenses for your glasses about four weeks after surgery to maximize your distance and near vision.

TIPS TO PROTECT YOUR EYES DURING THE WINTER MONTHS


With Winter here, it means many British Columbians are hitting the slopes! While many love the thrill of flying downhill, optometrists don’t want your eye health to do the same. As a B.C. Doctor of Optometry, I see many patients with eye health issues that could easily be prevented with proper eye protection. To help protect your eyes from the great outdoors, be sure to take the appropriate eye-health precautions. Below are some tips to help you separate the eye protection facts from fauxs:

UV protection is important

Wear eye goggles and/or sunglasses to block damaging UV rays. UV rays are strongest when you are at the highest altitude of a mountain, which is often where you’re skiing or snowboarding. Don’t forget that the highest exposure to UV rays is at mid-day and the reflection of sunlight from the snow into your eyes can have damaging long-term effects to your vision such as cataracts or macular retinopathies. Don’t be fooled by the clouds – you’re still at risk!

Know your lenses

When purchasing your eye goggles it’s important to understand that different tints are meant for different weather conditions. Purchasing goggles with interchangeable lenses is your safest option. Be sure to consult your BC Doctor of Optometry to select suitable eyewear and to ensure they are the correct prescription (if needed) for your eyes.

Say goodbye to dry eye

During the winter, dry air and low temperatures are two of the causes of dry eyes – your eyes may feel extremely irritated and red. To help with these symptoms, you may try artificial tears or increase your intake of Omega 3. If your symptoms continue to persist, have a dry eye evaluation with your Doctor of Optometry. They will have different options to treat your dry eyes.

Take action

If you experience any severe symptoms such as blurry vision, sore eyes, sensitivity to light, or redness, visit your local Doctor of Optometry as soon as possible. Visit us online at www.visionsourcenw.com.
Be proactive with your eye health this winter to help prevent any potentially harmful effects to your vision. Remember, the most important thing that you can do for your eyes is to get regular eye exams from your Doctor of Optometry. We recommend infants have their first eye exam between six and nine months of age. Children should have at least one eye exam between the ages of two and five, and yearly after starting school. Adults should have an eye exam every two years and seniors annually.

Bionic eye implants let Canadian perceive light

For the first time ever in Canada, two patients with severely impaired vision have received “bionic eyes” that will not restore their sight, but will allow them to once again perceive light.

Doctors at Toronto Western Hospital say the two patients have retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative disease in which the retina progressively becomes so damaged that most, if not all, vision is lost.

The bionic eye is known officially as the Argus II Retinal Prosthesis Device, and has two parts: The patient is outfitted with a pair of glasses with a built-in video camera, while a prosthesis the size of a pencil eraser is surgically implanted onto the retina.

Information from the camera is wirelessly transmitted to electrodes in the implant and converted to electrical pulses. These electrical pulses are turned into images, which are transmitted to the brain, Toronto Western’s Dr. Robert Devenyi explained to CTV News.

The patient must undergo intensive rehabilitation to learn how to process these images, he said.
The device stimulates the retina the same way that light normally does, just electronically, Devenyi said. “It really allows us to give vision to people who have no vision, and have no options for any type of rehabilitation,” Devenyi told CTV.

One of the Canadian patients is Orly Shamir, who had some residual vision as a child, but for the past dozen or so years could not see anything.

“After surgery and recovery, it’s like going back to childhood,” Shamir told CTV News Channel Tuesday afternoon.

Doctors tested Shamir’s vision before her surgery, and she was unable to detect a moving square on a computer screen. She was re-tested two weeks ago, and was able to detect the square, as well as the movement of a line across the screen.

“For me, it was very emotional because before I could not see any of it and now I can,” she said.

She was also able to see black and white stripes on a square board.

Shamir’s rehabilitation is ongoing. “I’m really excited about what’s to come,” she said.

Just last week, a patient who lost his vision to retinitis pigmentosa three decades ago had his bionic eye activated at Duke University Eye Center. Larry Hester was only the seventh patient in the U.S. to receive the bionic eye. When doctors activated the device, he exclaimed “Yes!”
